Lyrics from I've Always Been Gone- side one of All The Roads

I've Always Been Gone

I've Always Been Gone

Just like a dream that passes slowly
Just like the wind that blows along
Almost as if you didn't know me
you know i'm here but are you wrong?
i've never been off
an i've never been on
i've never been here
i've always been gone,

I find my happiness in changes
Go thru them up and out again,
Because I'm always rearranging
I always start and never end
I've never been off
An I've never been on
I've never been here I've always been gone,

So I'm 19 so I'm forty
Age is meaningless in years
you're as old as life will make you
Living in stardust or in tears
I've never been on
I've never been here
I've always been gone,

I've never been off
An I've never been on
I've never been here
I've always been gone.

Notes by Phil Dynan: I "feel" these lyrics. Joe and I grew up all over the place, "rearranging" our lives every two years. We drifted from Missouri to Delaware back to Missouri then to Saskatchewan then California then West Virginia then Kansas then Illinois then back to California then to Oregon then to Maryland.... feeling like "we always start and never end" relationships were hard to sustain. Joe held on to his music and writing and I held on to my art and writing. In the end, we were "living in stardust or in tears"...it was a rollercoaster ride. Joe quit high school and joined me in Chicago when I got out of the Army. In Chicago, we both found "home" and Joe's music blossomed like never before. He worked 24/7 on his music - sometimes going days without food or sleep. I used to leave trays of food by his bedroom door while he was recording his reel-to-reel tapes....sometimes I found the trays untouched, sometimes --- well I never did find some of them.
